Greece is renowned for its picturesque islands, each boasting its own unique charm, rich history and breathtaking landscapes. With over 2,000 islands to choose from, narrowing it down to the best can be a daunting task.
In this post, we’ll take you on a journey through the top 10 Greek islands that should be on every traveller’s bucket list. From the vibrant nightlife of Mykonos to the crystal-clear waters of Crete, we’ll explore the must-see destinations that make Greece a paradise for island-hoppers.
This post will cover:
Santorini
Located in the southern Aegean Sea, Santorini is arguably the most famous Greek island. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to this stunning island every year to experience its iconic villages and breathtaking Mediterranean scenery. I had the pleasure of visiting Santorini a few summers ago, and it truly lived up to the hype. To get to Santorini, you can take a ferry from Athens or fly in from most European cities.
One of the most famous places on the island is the village of Oia. This picturesque village is exactly what comes to mind when you think of Santorini – whitewashed houses, blue roofs, and a backdrop that’s simply breathtaking. I visited Oia early in the morning and witnessed the most incredible sunrise. If you plan to visit Oia, I highly recommend getting there as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

Santorini is also home to some stunning beaches. The Red Beach is famous for its maroon-colored sand and red cliffs, making you feel like you’re on Mars. Another beach I really enjoyed was Vlychada, located on the southern side of the island. The unique-looking cliffs, coupled with a narrow black sand beach, make for a truly unforgettable experience, plus it’s less crowded than the other beaches.
Milos
Milos has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and it’s easy to see why – its landscapes are simply incredible.
One of my favorite places on the island is Kleftiko, a stunning beach with gorgeous white rocks and crystal-clear water. You can take a boat to get there, or hike – either way, it’s an unforgettable experience. On your way, be sure to stop at the Sikia Cave and take a small boat into its picturesque cove.
Another unique spot on Milos is Sarakino Beach, which isn’t really a beach at all – it’s a moonlike landscape made of lava that’s been bleached by the sun and sea. There’s a small beach and swimming hole that opens up to the ocean, and some great cliff-jumping spots.
Milos also is also filled with picturesque fishing villages and beautiful towns. There are several idyllic villages right on the water, each with its own charm. One of my favorites is Mandrakia, a tiny village with a harbor filled with colorful boat garages. You can also visit Plaka, the capital of Milos which is a beautiful hilltop town overlooking the island. It’s a wonderful spot to relax and watch the sunset.

Mykonos
Another one of Greece’s most famous islands, Mykonos is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and picturesque white buildings. You can easily reach Mykonos by ferry or plane. Nicknamed the “Island of the Winds,” Mykonos boasts some impressive windmills that are definitely worth a visit. This island is ideal for those who want to relax during the day and party at night.
While you’re there, take a stroll along the charming cobblestone streets or unwind on one of Mykonos’ many beautiful beaches.

Rhodes
Situated in the Eastern Aegean Sea near Turkey, Rhodes is the fourth-largest island in Greece, Rhodes boasts breathtaking landscapes and a rich history. One of my top recommendations is exploring the Old Town, which dates back to the 14th century when the Knights of St. John occupied the island. They transformed a former Byzantine fortress into the impressive Palace of the Grand Master, one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece.
Another must-visit destination on the island is the charming town of Lindos. Its crowning jewel is the ancient Acropolis, which offers panoramic views of the town. The first temple built here dates back to around 900 BC, with subsequent additions made by the Romans and Byzantines. Today, it stands as one of Greece’s most well-preserved and popular archaeological sites.

Symi
Located just a few kilometers off the coast of Turkey, Symi is a picturesque island nestled above Rhodes. Nicknamed “The Jewel of the Dodecanese,” Symi is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
As Symi has no airport, the only way to reach the island is by ferry or boat. If you’re staying in Rhodes, Symi makes for a fantastic day trip. The island’s crown jewel is its stunning harbor, lined with colorful houses that overlook the sea. Beyond the harbor, Symi boasts an array of hidden treasures, each one showcasing the island’s incredible beauty. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, Symi is definitely worth a visit.

Crete
Crete is by far the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. It’s absolutely massive, boasting gorgeous scenery, relaxing beaches and world-class food.
In Crete I recommend you stay in Chania, a charming city with a historic Venetian Harbour and some of the tastiest food you’ll find in Greece. In Crete, it’s helpful to have a car so you can easily make your way to some of Crete’s beautiful beaches like Elafonissi, Falassarna and my favorite, Balos Beach.
Balos Beach is about an hour drive from Chania followed by a decent hike from the parking lot, but the beach and lagoon are well worth the journey. The remote peninsula features stunning scenery and crystal clear water. It’s definitely one of the most unique and beautiful beaches in all of Greece.

Corfu
The island of Corfu is one of the greenest Greek Islands, boasting lush landscapes and a unique charm that sets it apart from the other islands.
One of my favorite places on Corfu is Porto Timoni, an incredible horseshoe-shaped bay with beaches on both sides. The short hike down to the bay is well worth it, offering breathtaking views and a chance to relax on the beach.
Another interesting spot on the island is Cape Drastis, a rugged cliff area with uniquely shaped sea cliffs that are worth checking out, especially during sunset. The dramatic scenery and warm golden light make for a truly unforgettable experience.

Lefkada
Lefkada is conveniently connected to the mainland by a causeway, making it easy to drive to. The island’s landscape is characterized by white cliffs, lush green vegetation, and the sparkling Ionian Sea. One of my top picks is Milos Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand perfect for a summer afternoon.
Another must-visit spot is Porto Katsiki, a sandy beach with vibrant blue water and dramatic steep cliff surroundings. It’s the perfect place to relax, go for a swim and enjoy breathtaking sunset views.

Kefalonia
The island of Kefalonia is easily accessible by ferry or flight, and like other Ionian islands it boasts dramatic white cliffs and lush green vegetation.
One of my favorite places on the island is the charming village of Assos. This picturesque village is comprised of colorful houses built on a peninsula, overlooking the serene sea. A secluded cove creates a breathtaking setting, making Assos a quintessential Greek village.
If you prefer beaches, Myrtos Beach is a must-visit. This stunning 1.5 km long white sand beach has been voted Greece’s best beach multiple times. Another popular attraction on Kefalonia is the Melissani Cave. According to legend, the cave is where the nymph Melissani was drowned after being rejected by the god Pan. Although the legend is melancholic, the cave is anything but, featuring a beautiful underground lake with crystal-clear waters.

Zakynthos
Zakynthos is my absolute favorite Greek island. It’s a place I’ve visited twice and can’t wait to return to. This island has it all – from its dramatic white cliffs to its breathtakingly blue waters.
One of the most famous attractions on Zakynthos is the iconic Shipwreck Beach. Back in the 1980s, a cargo ship from Turkey, carrying illegal contraband, was chased by the Greek Navy into this secluded cove, where it crashed. Over the years, the sand has built up around the ship, creating one of the most stunning locations on the planet.
I took a boat to the beach, which is only accessible by sea. I was awestruck by the towering cliff walls, which rise over 1,000 feet above the shore. After exploring the beach, I hiked up to the cliffs to take in the breathtaking views. Watching the sunset from this vantage point was truly unforgettable – the ocean turned a milky blue, while the cliffs glowed orange in the fading light.
Another highlight of my trip to Zakynthos was renting a boat, exploring the island’s coastline, relaxing in secluded coves and visiting the picturesque island of Marathonisi.
